Hifn has introduced the HIPP II 8155 security protocol processor that delivers optimal price and performance for IPsec and SSL applications such as routers, switches, and VPN gateways.

The HIPP II 8155 performs multi-protocol packet processing for security protocols such as IPsec (ESP and AH), SSL, SRTP, WPA, CCMP, L2TP, and PPTP. At multi-gigabit speeds, the device reduces the computational overhead on host processors in routers and other networking equipment. It supports TLS and proposed AES ciphersuite extensions to TLS. TLS enhances SSL's older key exchange and message integrity options for even stronger security. The company's LZS and MPPC compression engines operate at 3.5Gbps, boosting overall system performance.

The integrated RISC DPU and firmware accelerate development times and maintain host software interface compatibility between other HIPP family members. Designed not only for VPN enabled appliances, the 8155's microcoded DPU can support new security protocols, such as IEEE 802.11 "Wi-Fi" standards.

Other features include an on-chip packet RAM, pipelined security engines with multi-core load balancing, multiple bus mastering DMA engines, optional session management subsystem, and an integrated Public Key subsection.

The 8155 features convenient industry standard hardware interfaces that enable straightforward integration with a wide variety of network and host processors. A 64-bit/133MHz PCI-X interface and a 32-bit, 104MHz POS-PHY level 3 compatible streaming bus interface provide a high degree of flexibility and throughput. The PCI-X interface is also backwards compatible to the PCI rev 2.2 64-bit/66MHz interface.

The 8155 PCI reference boards and software drivers can accelerate evaluation, prototype, and development for fast time-to-market. Customers can also speed up their 8155 development cycle by licensing Hifn's Software Development Kit.

Priced at $190 in quantities of 1,000, the product is packaged in a 576 PBGA, and is pin-compatible with the company's HIPP II 8154. Power requirement is 1.5V core and 3.3V I/O with typical power dissipation of 4W.
