Xilinx Inc. has announced a partnership with CMC Ltd. for a joint development center in Hyderabad in southern India.

The Xilinx-CMC India Development Center will focus on FPGA development for markets such as digital consumer electronics, automotive and communications, the partners said Thursday (February 26, 2004). The R&D center is one of the first in the region for Xilinx. It will provide management support, while CMC runs the center with dedicated technology and managerial staff.

"As Asia becomes the center for digital consumer electronics, it is a natural next step for Xilinx to establish a technology development center in India," said Xilinx CEO Willem Roelandts. "Our strategy is to invest resources in high-growth areas. We're confident that [the development center] will help us to expand our presence in the Asia-Pacific region."

The Asia-Pacific region and Japan already account for more than 35 percent of total revenues at Xilinx in 2003, up from 13 percent four years ago, the company said.

"We're partnering with Xilinx to develop leading-edge FPGA technology solutions," said R. Ramanan, managing director and CEO of CMC Ltd. CMC supplies embedded and real-time hardware. It is part of the Tata Group, one of India's largest industrial conglomerates.
