Developed to meet the specific requirements of the car manufacturer, the LED light source from Osram Opto Semiconductors provides bright directional light that can be dimmed without changing the color.

The light source is behind the head-up displays in the BMW 5 series as part of a driver information system that Siemens VDO Automotive is supplying for the new BMW.

Osram explains that the most important property of the light source, and the one that enables it to be used in the head-up display, is its extraordinarily high luminance of more than 500,000cd/m?.

The device has a total of 128 bright red and green LED chips, which are used to produce the typical orange color used for all the dashboard indicators. The chips are arranged in groups of four in a matrix of 32 chip modules that provides particularly uniform illumination for the TFT display on which the head-up display is based.

The matrix is attached to an aluminum heat sink and comes with a casing and flexible cable connector. Measuring 58-by-26mm, the complete LED module takes up less space than conventional lighting solutions, and features long life, vibration resistance and thermal stability. The design can be varied in terms of its color, shape and size.
