Atmel Corp. has launched a family of high performance, low voltage GMR pre-amplifier products that are designed by the company's Network Storage Products Business Unit.

The 3.3V and 5V series of read/write Giant Magnetoresistive (GMR) pre-amps support up to 500Mbps data rate. Suitable for 0.85-, 1.0-, and 1.8-inch hard disk drives, the devices are available as the one-channel AT78C6001 or the two-channel AT78C6002, which feature similar capabilities and functions.

The amplifiers provide low noise to the GMR head amplifier, and have integrated capacitors, which minimize the designer's need for external components. Both GMR pre-amps are programmable through serial port interfaces. According to Atmel, their GMR pre-amplifiers deliver the lowest signal-to-noise ratio for clarity and channel.

Integrating a GMR ESD protection structure within the reader, the products provide GMR read bias current control, write driver with programmable write current and pre-emphasis programmable thermal asperity detection and correction.

Both devices are housed in a 24-pin TSSOP package and can also be available in other packages based on customer's requirement. Pricing is based on volume and shipment forecast. The company will also provide samples, an evaluation board and firmware in addition to technical support.
