Presently, there is a growing demand for touch panels where reflectance of sunlight is as minimal as possible for easier viewing of the displayed images. This was brought about by the increasing popularity of screens in car navigation equipment, digital camcorders, and digital still cameras.

As a response, SMK Corp. has developed a touch panel with 1 percent reflectance using glass plates for the upper and lower electrodes. According to the company, they were able to reduce the reflectance by applying the anti-reflection (AR) finish on both the top and bottom surfaces.

Previous products that were structured with a polarization plate and differential phase shifter attached on the upper electrode achieved its 6.5 percent reflectance level by absorption of the reflectance within the touch panel. SMK explained that a 6.5 percent reflectance is not sufficient to keep the LCD panels free from loss of visibility of images on the LCD screen.

Offering resistance to harsh environments encountered by car navigation equipment, the super low reflectance touch panel features a 72 percent transparency, 3 percent linearity, 7 percent haze value, and 2H surface hardness.

Planned production for the touch panel is 20,000 units per month.
