Engineered for DVD video players, the SP8110 laser diode modulator (LDM) from Sipex Corp. features two output channels and a 400MHz on-chip adjustable oscillator with the nominal 400MHz modulation frequency adjustable for both channels via an external resistor Rf tied to ground.

According to the company, the LDMs utilize high frequency current modulation to suppress the noise of grounded laser diodes. The SP8110's two output channels are individually programmable up to 130mA to operate two grounded laser diodes for both DVD and CD operation.

"Our new modulator addresses customers' concerns about the noise inherent in many laser diodes," said Kevin Plouse, SVP of marketing and business development.

Intelligent inputs determine which output should be driven based on input current levels. Both a power saving mode as well as an error mode have been added to enhance application performance.

The SP8110 features a 100X current gain, two selectable outputs for driving 650nm and 780nm laser diodes, up to 130mA output current on either channel, a 0.1mA power saving mode, and a extended temperature range of -40C to 85C. Offered in an 8-pin 2-by-3mm DFN package, the device is priced at 55 cents in 10,000 piece quantities. An evaluation board is also available.
