The Deskstar 7K400 hard drive from Hitachi Global Storage Technologies provides enough capacity to store 400h of standard TV programming, 45h of HDTV programming, or more than 6,500h of high quality digital music.

Designed for audio video and ATA nearline environments, where large capacities and a lower per-gigabyte cost are key requirements, the 400GB drive includes a new industry-standard AV feature known as Streaming Command Set.

This AV feature is engineered to enhance streaming functionality in digital video applications as it optimizes the drives for storing and retrieving digital video content on a DVR.

According to Hitachi, the device is the world's highest capacity 3.5-inch ATA hard drive. It features a 757Mbps media data rate, 8.5ms average seek time, 7,200rpm at 4.17ms average latency, 5 aluminum platters, 3.1 Bels typical idle acoustics, and a Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) spindle motor, which is used in enterprise-class hard drives.

Hot-plug capability

With a 25.4mm height, the product will ship with Parallel ATA and Serial ATA (SATA) interfaces.

SATA is a scalable interface technology that currently delivers a maximum data transfer rate of up to 1.5Gbps. It also simplifies device configuration, improves data integrity and offers "hot-plug" capability, which allows the drives to be installed or removed while the host system is operational. SATA drives also use a compact cabling structure and smaller connectors that are designed to enhance air flow and reduce system complexity.

The hard drive also includes a new anti-rebound actuator latch and Rotational Vibration Safeguard technology (RVS) that is used to ensure drive performance in high rotational vibration environments. It has an 8MB buffer and carries a three-year warranty. Hitachi is currently shipping Deskstar 7K400 drives in limited quantities.
