After two years of troubled IC markets, and a continued trend to increased ASSP and FPGA use, some companies have quit the digital ASIC business. However, the main suppliers are still fighting on, and finding a more encouraging market environment. Suppliers that focused on the fixed communications markets fared worst as boom turned to bust, but many have diversified into high-growth consumer markets.

Based from IMS Research's recently published 2004 report, "The World Markets for Classic and Core-based ASICs" with renewed spending on computing and communications infrastructure, the ASIC market is set to see good short-term growth of around 10 percent per annum. Although this growth sounds modest, it means that the total market for ASICs is forecast to give total combined revenues in excess of $100 billion in the six years from 2003 to 2008.
