The RF/IF (radio/intermediate frequency) IC from Analog Devices Inc. (ADI) is an active receive mixer designed to address the demanding signal processing requirements of wireless infrastructure designs such as cellular GSMs, CDMAs and private mobile access equipment.

According to ADI, the AD8344 offers designers flexibility in frequency planning and IF selection, as well as the smallest footprint and lowest power specifications available on the RF IC market. Unlike conventional passive mixers that require many external components, the active mixer integrates an on-chip LO driver and provides conversion gain to minimize the need for external gain stages. It features a 50-ohm broadband inputs for both the RF and LO ports, input frequency range from 400MHz to 1.2GHz, LO frequency range between 400MHz and 1,600MHz, and IF frequency range from 70MHz to 400MHz.

Fabricated on the company's advanced silicon germanium (SiGe) complementary bipolar IC process, the IC provides a high input linearity of 24dBm IIP3 with 3dB conversion gain and an 11.5dB noise figure at 900MHz. At 450MHz, the AD8344 provides an input linearity of 15dBm IIP3, with 10dB conversion gain and an 8.5dB noise figure.

Operating on a single 5V supply, the low-power product requires LO drive from -10dBm to 4dBm. Available for $3.50, it is packaged in a 3-by-3mm LFCSP package with an operating temperature range of -40C to 85C.
