Renesas Technology Corp. and M-Systems Flash Disk Pioneers Ltd. have agreed to collaborate on the SH-Mobile platform, an application processor that Renesas has been promoting for multimedia mobile phones.

The SH series processor is one of main products that Renesas acquired from Hitachi Ltd when Hitachi and Mitsubishi Electric Corp. formed semiconductor-dedicated Renesas.

Mobile phones are metamorphosing from simple voice communicators to multimedia information platforms. Such phones use two-processor configurations: a baseband processor for communications and an application processor for multimedia functions. The SH-Mobile holds about 50 percent market share in the application processors market, according to a Renesas spokesman.

Under the agreement, M-Systems will port its Mobile DiskOnChip system by June to the solution engine that Renesas is offering customers as the development kit for phones based on SH-Mobile. Mobile DiskOnChip is a NAND-based, on-board memory solution. The solution engine thus far supports only SuperAND flash memory that Renesas provides.

Through the collaboration, Renesas expects to promote the SH-Mobile processor for customers of M-Systems' Mobile DiskOnChip outside of Japan. M-Systems also expects to enter Japan's mobile phone market.
