Elma Electronic Inc. has launched surface-mount bi-color LEDs that promise to provide more options for users.

The hard-to-find configuration is based on the company's 1201 series form factor. Using the same footprint as Elma's single-color LEDs, existing customers can simply drop-in the bi-color versions in the same location on their boards. Standard versions are available with front-supporting solder tag or additional fixing pin for extra secure mounting to the PCB.

According to Elma, the surface mount devices save costs in the manufacturing process. They can be mounted with other surface-mount components without the expense of drilling special holes, and the cost of a separate soldering process is saved.

Additionally, the size and shape of the LEDs are designed for easy use with pick-and-place machines, simplifying the assembly process. The red/green color is standard, with other color combinations available upon request. The LEDs are packaged in tape and reel, with 480 pieces to a reel.
