RF Micro Devices said Thursday (April 15, 2004) that it has landed a patent for the power control circuitry housed inside its PowerStar power amplifier modules for GSM/GPRS mobile phone designs.

RFMD's integrated power control approach is based on a collector voltage control that does not require external components and demonstrates minimum variation across temperature. By embedding this control technique in the module, RFMD said it eliminates the need for directional couplers, detector diodes, power-control ASICs and other power control circuitry on a mobile phone board designs.

RFMD's power control circuitry is detailed in patent number 6,701,138. It is used in the company's RF3110, RF3133, RF3140, RF3146, and RF3177 power amp modules.
