Contract electronics manufacturer Flextronics is joining forces with system-on-chip supplier inSilica Inc. to bolster its silicon development capabilities. The move is part of a trend by manufacturers to become one-stop shops for design and product development.

The partners said the SoC development agreement will allow them to shape the design and supply of silicon within products made by Singapore-based Flextronics. "This increased scope of silicon capabilities, now spanning FPGA replacement to mixed-signal ASIC and complex digital SoC development, further secures our position as a valuable system development partner for our customers," Duncan Robertson, senior VP of Flextronics Design Serves, said in a statement.

Along with SoC expertise and intellectual property, the partnership with inSilica gives Flextronics access to design and development resources in the growing Asian design hub in Bangalore, India.

The deal with inSilica follows similar deals over last year in which Flextronics has sought savings and fast turnaround capabilities by bringing new expertise in-house. Last November, it joined forces with startup eASIC Inc., also based in Santa Clara, in an apparent move into structured ASICs.
