The Industrial Technology Intelligence Services (ITIS) of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, forecasts that the production value of Taiwan's IC industry will increase by 44.3 percent, reaching NT$514.80 billion ($15.6 billion at NT$33:$1) in the first half of the year. "This is a remarkable growth," announced an IT IS spokesperson. "The industry registered a growth rate of only 1.3 percent for the same period last year."

The spokesperson points out that the growth is driven by the rising demand for DVD chipsets, LCD drivers and controllers, memory products, 8/16/32-bit MCUs and computer chipsets and peripherals ICs. "This year, the projected jump in the global demand for memory products is 30 percent. Consumer ICs, including MPEG devices designed for use in DVRs, PVRs, STB+DVRs/PVRs, DSCs, smart phones and camcorders will post a higher growth this year," the spokesperson adds.
