The Department of Industrial Technology (DoIT) of Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs has allocated NT$6 billion ($181.21 million at NT$33.11:$1) for the development of key components and parts for TFT-LCD panels in the next four years. "This will strengthen the R&D capabilities of Taiwan's TFT-LCD panel companies. We hope to increase the percentage of Taiwan-made components and parts for TFT-LCD panels from 40 to 80 percent so that we won't import anymore," said J.C. Hwang, director general.

According to DoIT, Taiwan's TFT-LCD panel industry needs to invest over NT$10 billion ($302.02 million) each year to acquire components and parts from abroad. "This is because of the stiff competition posed by our Japanese and South Korean rivals. So we have to speed up the development on our own," Hwang explained.

Key components and parts for TFT-LCDs include color filters, polarizers, backlight modules, driver ICs and glass substrates. "We hope that starting 2006, about 80 percent of these components and parts will be made in Taiwan. We are also developing advanced nano and organic materials designed for use in TFT-LCD panels, active OLEDs and flexible displays," Hwang added.
