Together with the rapid acceptance of advanced display technologies and advanced formats for broadcasting video content, equipment manufacturers must now assess and control the video quality for devices that output a variety of signal formats.

As a response, Tektronix Inc. has released the VM5000 platform that offers flexible configuration via SD and HD options additional measurement parameters and new timesaving test utilities. According to the company, these additions make the VM5000 the most comprehensive automated solution available for component analog signal analysis.

"Video applications are becoming more pervasive in consumer electronics as demand continues to rise for new video-enabled gear," said Todd Biddle, VP of Tektronix's Video Product Line. "This positive trend requires video equipment manufacturers to be equipped with design tools that provide automated, repeatable results."

Biddle further added, "With the addition of SD capability to Tektronix's proven VM5000HD Analyzer, designers and manufacturers now have a complete solution for SD and HD product testing that generates reliable results and will be accepted by suppliers and customers alike."

The VM5000 is capable of testing SD (480i, 480p, 576i, and 576p) and HD (720p, 1080i, and 1080p) video formats to user selected tolerance limits delivering fully automated, go/no go results. Equipped with high-speed signal acquisition hardware, optimized video measurement algorithms, and an integrated, high performance oscilloscope, the device offers flexibility for users testing modern consumer digital television (DTV) reception and play-out devices.

The VM5000 measurement set identifies common component signal impairments, ensures operability with connected display devices, and assesses video parameters proven to correlate with video signal fidelity. Measurement parameters include sync amplitude and timing, levels, noise, frequency response, nonlinearity, transient response and inter-channel timing.

Current VM5000HD owners can upgrade their existing instruments to the new software capabilities of the VM5000. The VM5HDUP Option SD upgrade kit not only adds SD format support but also upgrades the HD test utilities to the latest revision offered with new instruments.
