Amid price cuts for flash-memory cards, digital camera shipments from Japan totaled 4.2 million in the first quarter, up 71 percent over the same period a year ago, according to RBC Capital Markets.

RBC estimated the Japanese digital camera market will hit 75 million units in 2004, up 39 percent from 2003. Japanese vendors account for an estimated 80 percent of global digital camera shipments.

"With [greater than] 4 megapixel cameras now accounting for 49 percent of total shipments exiting Q1, we continue to expect 512 MB cards will be the sweet spot in the retail sector in 2004," according to RBC, an investment banking firm based here.

"Notably 5 megapixel cameras now account for 24 percent exiting Q1 compared to 10 percent for Q1:03. In addition, SanDisk has initiated price cuts in Q2 to accelerate this conversion. Notably, we are already beginning to see 512 MB cards for $50 to $100 in the retail channel," the company said.
