MIPS Technologies Inc. and Sonics Inc. have joined forces in combining a 32-bit processor and SMART interconnect IP to dramatically cut the development time of cost-effective SOCs for digital multimedia applications, such as digital set-top boxes and digital TV receivers.

Cores from MIPS' 32-bit synthesizable MIPS32 24Kc processor core family can now be integrated with Sonics' SiliconBackplane III MicroNetwork, multimedia-optimized Smart Interconnect IP.

The Sonics SiliconBackplane III connects a MIPS 24Kc core to any other IP block, such as DSPs or MPEG2 and MPEG4 encoders/decoders and replaces the plethora of buses, custom interconnects and control wires typically used in SOCs, according to the companies.
