Vishay Intertechnology Inc. has disclosed that its first family of surface-mount thyristor surge-protective devices provide excellent clamping performance with bidirectional "crowbar" protection.

With maximum breakover voltage values ranging from 70V to 395V and surge capabilities up to 100A, the family offers surge capabilities of 50A (10/1000?s) for devices in both the SMA and SMB packages, and up to 100A (10/1000?s) for the larger SMB package.

Used as direct replacements for industry-standard devices with the same part numbers, the new ThyZorb products offer clamping specifications as much as 10 percent better. Lower breakover voltages and a fast turn-on time reduce "let-thru" voltages that may damage sensitive telecom circuits.

The ThyZorb devices also feature a typical leakage current of <50nA, minimum holding current of 150mA, and a stand-off voltage range between 55V and 320V.

Vishay explained that while avalanche-type transient voltage suppressors that share the same size and voltage rating will clamp at a given breakdown voltage, their new thyristor surge-protective devices feature a crowbar action that enables switching from a high-impedance, high-voltage "off" state to a low-impedance, low-voltage "on" state. This feature allows the devices to redirect current surges to ground. And since the voltage across the ThyZorb device collapses when the voltage and current exceeds a predetermined breakover level, the device can handle higher levels of surge current than an avalanche-type TVS.

The low-profile SMA and SMB molded plastic packages have UL Flammability Classification 94V-0, and feature built-in strain relief for high reliability in surface-mounted applications. All of the new devices are offered with exact competitor part numbers for cross-referencing. Samples and production quantities of the SMP50, SMP100LC, PxxxxSA/A/AA, and SMTPA series are available with lead times of approximately 12 weeks for initial orders.
