The new ZSP200 DSP core from LSI Logic Corp. is designed to meet the increased demand for cost-effective, low-power signal processing solutions.

With dual-ALU and one multi-function MAC unit, the product is a fully synthesizable, two-issue superscalar DSP core that is code-compatible with all ZSP digital signal processor cores. It can be easily integrated into and programmed in a user's SoC design, and is available with AMBA master/slave interfaces and a range of supporting peripherals for audio and voice applications.

"We have received persistent customer requests for an additional compact DSP alternative," said Prasad Kalluri, senior director of LSI Logic DSP research and development. "We responded with the ZSP200, which can execute twice the number of instructions per cycle and offer more power efficiency, while maintaining the same cost level as single-issue DSP and general-purpose processors."

Based on the first generation ZSP architecture, the ZSP200 is fully supported by development and EDA tools, and applications software. As all other ZSP cores, the device can be designed and manufactured in any silicon foundries.

According to the final 2003 WSTS (World Semiconductor Trade Statistics), the DSP market generated $6.13 billion in revenue, a 26.3 percent growth over 2002. Markus Levy, EEMBC president and independent analyst, sees an even bigger market potential as more DSP implementations become part of SoC designs.
