Prices of mylar speakers are poised to rise. A majority, or about 73 percent, of the respondents to Global Sources Electronic Components survey forecast prices to increase by up to 10 percent; nearly 27 percent predict an increase of up to 20 percent.

Manufacturers are considering price hikes as quotes for iron, stainless steel and plastic jumped nearly 30 percent. The cost of copper also rose by 25 to 30 percent in the past 12 months. So far, however, most makers have not altered their price-setting, preferring to momentarily absorb the cost difference while watching closely how the raw materials will behave in the marketplace in the coming months.

Changzhou Xinglie Electronic Equipment Fty will increase its prices by 20 percent, says Shen Jizhong, sales manager. Shenzhen JiaXingxin Electronics Co. Ltd, on its part, will raise its prices by 30 percent, says Lin Hai, sales manager. Meanwhile, Jinxing Horn Fty will adjust its quotes upward by more than 30 percent, says Dai Renli, sales manager.

However, BeStar Electronics Ind. Co. Ltd, one of the largest manufacturers in mainland China, will keep prices of its low-end products unchanged. "Most of our profits are driven by high-end products," says Wu Yifei, general manager. Changzhou No. 6 Radio Components Fty is also maintaining its prices while it is weighing the increasing raw-material quotes, says Xiao Jianhu, sales manager.

Despite the looming price hikes, demand is still forecast to increase. Sixty percent of the respondents expects demand to rise by up to 30 percent. Consequently, production is also expected to increase by as much as the demand's forecast rise.

Jinxing Horn, for instance, will increase its production by up to 30 percent. Guangxing Electronics Co. Ltd will also ramp up its production by as much.
