Dallas Semiconductor Corp. has introduced the DS2431, 1Kb single-wire EEPROM. The single-wire interface multiplexes all the communication signals required to read or write to the DS2431, together with the means to power the chip, onto a single I/O pin.

It operates from 2.8V to 5.25V over the extended temperature range (-40C to 85C), and is available in tiny 6-pin TSOC and UCSP packages. This enables the designer to easily embed the device in applications such as medical and IEEE 1451.44-compliant sensors, accessories, and peripherals where electrical contacts are limited or minimizing wiring complexity is necessary.

Programmable features include write protection and an OTP EPROM mode which is useful to gauge the consumption of a nonreplenishable consumable or to keep a running count of use events with a limited-use product.
