WiBro will play a big role in bridging third-generation (3G) and fourth-generation (4G) wireless systems with its Pre-4G lineup, said professor Hong from Seo-Kang University during the recent Expo Comm Wireless 2004 held in Seoul, South Korea.

He added that as one of the fastest growing innovative technology, 4G is already here; however, it will reach its peak by 2007 and will be standardized by 2012. Hong stressed in his speech titled "Technology Evolution for Wireless Broadband Access," that portable Internet is entering the limelight and is here to stay. He also indicated the limitations of present wireless LAN (WLAN) and mobile phone systems.

Hong said that WLAN systems can offer up to 54Mbps of high speed service in a low-cost package but has problems of coverage, security and quality. Mobile phones, on the other hand, do not have these problems, but users are looking away from it because of delays.

Hong cited an example, "If costumers want to use WLANs, they need to seek and move to one of the many access points offering WLAN service. This shows the low coverage status of this system. This constitutes to about 28 million terminals, or 30 percent."

"For portable Internet," he added, "the standard is about to be released and will be available in late 2005 or early 2006. We are looking forward to the technical advantages of this standard (IEEE 802.16)."

The WiBro system will be deployed in metro networks with data rates running up to 1Mbps.
