National Semi ADC requires 75 percent less power

National Semiconductor Corp. has disclosed that its CMOS ADC requires 75 percent less power than most comparable products on the market.

Suitable for high-performance applications such as test and measurement and communications equipment, the ADC081000 digitizes signals to 8-bit resolution at sampling rates up to 1.6GHz while consuming 1.4W from a 1.9V nominal supply.

"With the ADC081000, National is expanding its ADC product offerings into the GHz range with an extremely low-power product that enables our customers to eliminate heatsinks, saving both board space and system cost," said Andrew Jue, director of marketing for National Semi's Data Conversion Systems group. "National's proprietary, analog-optimized 0.18?m CMOS process enables us to deliver high-performance ADCs with the lowest power consumption in the industry."

The ADC081000 is designed with a low bit error rate (BER). At a 1.6GHz sampling rate and input frequencies up to 100MHz, the product achieves 0.15LSB DNL, 0.35LSB INL and 7.5ENOB. According to the company, these specifications are especially important in high-speed oscilloscopes.

National Semi also said that their ADC features a unique folding/interpolating architecture. The folding reduces the number of comparators, while the interpolation reduces the number of front-end amplifiers required, saving power and reducing the load on the input signal. The device also has a National LVDS (low voltage differential signaling) interface, which enables reliable transmission of high-speed signals, while maintaining low noise and distortion levels.

Housed in a 128-lead exposed pad package, the ADC081000 is priced at $100 in 1,000-unit volumes.
