Silicon Laboratories is the latest company to join the rush to establish joint development laboratories for mobile communications devices and applications in China. The lab is linked with TCL Mobile Communication, one of China's fastest growing handset makers.

The lab is designed to support TCL with RF design capabilities for its next-generation handsets.

Earlier this month, TCL announced an agreement with Alcatel in an effort to become a leading handset manufacturer.

The joint laboratory will be located at TCL's facility in Huizhou, and is staffed with Silicon Laboratories engineers. The two teams to work closely on the development of TCL's next-generation of handsets, the partners said.

The initiative expands the companies' relationship. TCL selected Silicon Laboratories' Aero I transceiver for many of its new production handsets featuring color screens, cameras and Java technology.
