Cingular Wireless has picked Lucent Technologies to deploy a 3G UMTS trial network in the Atlanta market this summer that will allow Cingular to evaluate voice, data, and multimedia performance. The UMTS network will operate in Cingular Wireless' 1,900MHz spectrum, and will include testing of high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) technology, which allows a UMTS network to deliver downlink speeds of up to 14.4Mbps. The network also will be designed to support VoIP services in the future. As part of the deal, Lucent will supply Cingular with an end-to-end mobile network based on 3G UMTS technology, including the Merlin U520 UMTS Wireless PC Modem Cards. These cards are jointly developed by Lucent and Novatel Wireless and support data rates of 384Kbps. A software upgrade to the Merlin system will enable Lucent to provide HSDPA capabilities.
