Spreadtrum develops GSM/GPRS baseband processing chip

Spreadtrum Communications Shanghai Ltd has announced its baseband processing chip that supports GSM and GPRS operation. The chip, with independent property rights, suits mobile phones, smart phones, PDAs, wireless data speed transmission of intellectual traffic system, security systems, remote medical systems and remote control and test systems.

The breakthrough has realized a single-chip design, with digital baseband, analogue baseband and power management functions integrated into one chip, says Wu Ping, president.

The chip features higher integration, smaller size, better performance and lower power dissipation compared with products of its kind from foreign rivals, the company claims.

Spreadtrum aims to be one of the largest IC design houses in mainland China within two years and be one of the world's five largest in five years.
