Fairchild SPDT switch has extensive ESD protection

The new dual Single Pole, Double Throw (SPDT) switch from Fairchild Semiconductor is claimed by the company to feature low distortion and exceptional ESD protection.

With an on-resistance of 0.95 ohms, the FSA2257 analog switch is designed for use in cellphones, digital still cameras, PDAs, medical electronics, industrial instrumentation and other portable products. It provides bidirectional operation, allowing configuration either as a multiplexer or demultiplexer by select pins.

"The dual SPDT configuration of this device allows ultra-portable designers flexibility in routing the audio signals, such as speaker sharing or hands-free function implementation," said Jerry Johnston, product manager for analog switches.

Key performance specifications of the normally closed (NC) switch include a total harmonic distortion (THD) of 0.002 percent that minimizes distortion placed on the signal as it passes through the switch, a 1.65V to 5.5V operating voltage range, a 8kV ESD performance (Human Body Model), and a 2nA leakage current and 20pC charge injection that minimize offset error in signal S/H applications.

The FSA2257 comes in ten-terminal leadless MicroPak (L10X suffix) packaging on 5,000-piece tape-and-reels compatible with standard high-speed manufacturing equipment. The lead-free product meets or exceeds the requirements of the joint IPC/JEDEC standard J-STD-020B and is compliant with European Union requirements that will take effect in 2005.

The switch is priced at 75 cents each for 1,000-unit quantities. Additional information can be found on the company website.
