NKK Switches is offering an improved version of its small STN LCD display with a wider, high-contrast viewing area of 13.9-by-10.6mm and a 36 x 24 pixel resolution to maximize clarity. Pixel size is 0.32-by-0.32mm.

Available with straight PC terminals and bi-color (red and green) LED backlighting with standard or super bright options, the small programmable display is designed for space-constrained applications that require graphics, text or moving images. They can be used alone or with electromechanical switches.

Two key applications for the small displays include handheld test and instrumentation units as well as server blades, where there are tight space constraints, said Jeff Kroenig, product development manager for NKK.

The company has also launched a new online design tool, where engineers can purchase a SMARTSWITCH display development kit (IS-Dev Kit-1) that consists of one LCD module and two electromechanical switches. The development kit allows designers to prototype display module designs for text, graphics and other functionality and test it with NKK's online design tool at its website. Once that's completed, the data can be downloaded into the development kit to incorporate into new designs or for future prototypes.

Additionally, the display development kit offers a degree of flexibility. The LCD module and switches can be interchanged and instead of a green/red LED, engineers may request yellow backlighting. The board size measures 7.72-by-2.99cm, and the power requirement is 9V, although it can run on 12V, maximum 150mA.

Kroenig said the new development kits are designed to speed up the design cycle and to reduce development costs and time-to-market. By using the prototype kits, designers can evaluate the displays for how fine the resolution is, how the colors look, and other functionality before placing an order. "This saves them a lot of time and cost," he said.

NKK also offers two additional development kits. They include a two switch development kit (IS-Dev Kit-2) and a switch/display development kit with two SMARTSWITCHES and one LCD module (IS-Dev Kit-3).

Another leap forward for NKK is the availability of RGB LED backlighting, which is planned for release in fourth quarter 2004. This will allow the company to offer 256 color options, up from three colors today, Kroenig said.

Pricing for the displays is $15 in quantities of 1,000, while the IS-Dev Kit 1 is available for $169.
