SMK Corp. has launched a pressure sensing optical touch panel where input registration is touch force (pressure) dependent.

Optical touch panels are typically structured to read the position where infrared rays scanning a few millimeters above the touch panel surface are obstructed by a finger, explained SMK. Freedom from physical movement such as switch contacts allows longer input durability (longer service life). However, roaming fingers hovering above the screen or sleeves or neckwear can cause unintentional input (erroneous input).

The new pressure sensing touch panel has separate coordinate reading and input entry functions so that entry of input can be set with the pressure on the panel. The company said that with this technology, easy to understand operation such as "touch a button and press to input" is now a reality with touch panels, eliminating possible unintentional input by such objects as hovering fingers or sleeves.

Interface is through serial or USB.
