Taiwan's LCD industry registered a 115.3 percent increase in production value in the first quarter amounting to $5.08 billion.

According to the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), over $3.82 billion of the total production value was generated by LCDs, which earned a 21.7 percent jump. On their part, related businesses and components generated $1.27 billion, gaining a 36.3 percent increase. The organization attributed the industry's performance to the growing popularity of digital home appliances such as LCD TVs, mobile phones and PDAs.

The ITRI also expects that the annual sales revenues of large TFT-LCDs will reach $13.17 billion for the whole year. At present, Taiwan-made large TFT-LCDs enjoy a 40.2 percent share in the global market, up 25.5 percent from the fourth quarter of last year. Meanwhile, small-sized TFT-LCDs take up a 5.9 percent share.
