The demand for the inclusion of cameras in mobile phones, notebook PCs, PDAs and other compact mobile devices is presently strong. To get a piece of the action, Alps Electric Co. Ltd developed two compact, high-image-quality 1.3 megapixel (MP) camera modules - the FPDF0X and FPDF8X (with autofocus) series.

The FPDF0X series employs the company's proprietary optical design and aspherical molded glass lens technologies. According to Alps, the high image quality was achieved through the optical and mechanical design that elicits the full capabilities of the CMOS sensor.

Measuring 10-by-10-by-8.5mm, the FPDF0X series features a 1,280x1,024 (SXGA) resolution, 90mW current drain, 15fps maximum frame rate, and I?C interface. This series has a 2.8V analog and digital supply voltage, and 1.8 to 2.8V I/O supply voltage.

The FPDF8X series incorporates a stepping motor developed using the company's original cutting and mold-machining technology. Lens movement is 394?m total in 35 steps. This system offers precise focusing at all settings from infinity to macro. In addition, an integral digital signal processor and algorithm for image processing make linear autofocus possible.

The FPDF8X has a dimension of 14.9-by-14.9-by-9mm, current drain of 300mW (max), supply voltage of 2.5V 10 percent (130mA max) and adjustment speed of 280ms min (10cm from macro to infinity).

Sample shipments of the FPDF0X series will commence in July, those of the FPDF8X in August.
