Anticipating a 20 to 30 percent annual demand growth rate, mainland flexible printed circuit (FPC) makers are gearing up to expand their production capacities. According to Ren Huili, vice manager for marketing, Xiamen New Flex Electronics Co. Ltd will expand its FPC monthly production capacity this year from 5,000m? to 8,000m? to meet the growing requirements of the communications sector. The company produces FPCs for computer peripherals, aerospace, telecommunications, automotive and medical applications and consumer electronic products.

This year, Xiamen New Flex also targets increasing its exports to Japan, South Korea and the United States.

Ren reveals that the flourishing local FPC industry has attracted foreign makers who are as capable of producing multilayer and high- precision FPCs with their advanced equipment.

Hunan Computer Co. Ltd, for example, a leading supplier of computer terminal products, has tied up with MFS Singapore (previously known as Ifracom Pte Ltd) to establish a high-precision multilayer FPC production base in Changsha. The $12 million facility is expected to realize an annual production value of $100 million. It kicks off its operations in October this year.

Yan Yingdong of Time Electronic Business Enterprise Co. Ltd points out that high-tech products have continually extended FPC applications to automotive and portable electronic devices, such as mobile phones, video cameras and digital cameras.

Currently, most mainland makers are engaged in single-sided and double-sided FPC manufacturing.

Multilayer FPCs only account for 15 to 20 percent of the whole FPC industry in mainland China, far behind the 40 percent share it enjoys in the global market. Lately, however, more customers have been placing orders for FPCs with over 25 layers, used in high-tech electronic products.

Mainland suppliers say they will put more emphasis on multilayer FPCs to meet the rising demand from mobile phone, digital camera and communications sectors. Yan says that Time Electronic is planning to start a small batch production of 3- to 4-layer FPCs by year-end. Xiamen New Flex is also scheduled to enter the multilayer FPC line next year.
