TI ADC eyes high-resolution measurement apps

Texas Instruments Inc. claims that it has developed the industry's smallest four-channel, 24-bit delta-sigma analog-to-digital converter (ADC).

A part of the company's Burr-Brown product line, the data converter is designed for high-resolution measurement applications where space and power consumption are critical, such as portable instrumentation, portable medical equipment, industrial process control, remote sensors, smart transmitters and weigh scales.

"The ADS1224 delivers excellent performance at 240SPS data rate, low power and wide dynamic range in a miniature TSSOP package," said Jim Todsen, product line manager for TI's oversampling data converters. "This unmatched combination of performance, flexibility and size provides customers with a high-performance industrial ADC specifically designed for demanding measurements in portable and power-constrained applications."

The device includes a four-channel differential input multiplexer, which accepts rail-to-rail inputs and features a temperature sensor for ambient temperature measurement. The optional input buffer allows the direct connection to high-impedance sensors without bias current errors, and the dedicated I/O pins directly control the input multiplexer, temperature sensor and input buffer, eliminating the need for onboard control registers.

The ADS1224 quickly shuts down (standby mode) while idle between measurements to reduce the overall power consumption (<1?A). The two-wire interface easily connects to all popular microcontrollers, and provides all the necessary control for data retrieval, self-calibration and standby mode. Multiple devices can be synchronized for true simultaneous sampling. The ADC supports 2.7V to 5.5V analog and digital supplies and a maximum operating temperature range of -55C to 125C.

Packaged in a TSSOP-20 and consuming 300?A of current, the product has a suggested resale pricing of $3.25 in 1,000 piece quantities, with evaluation modules available for $49.
