The RT2500USB chipset from Ralink Technology Corp. consists of the RT2526 radio IC and the RT2571 BBP/MAC IC with a fully integrated USB 2.0 interface.

According to the company, WLAN manufacturers using the RT2500USB can now create high-performance, low-cost devices that bring 802.11g/b connectivity to any USB enabled device with a host CPU.

Targeting the latest USB 2.0 applications (but is compatible with USB1.1 interface from the USB-IF certification), the RT2500USB also addresses the need for higher levels of secure wireless communication, and incorporates the latest in WLAN security protocols. These include Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA and WPA2) and 802.11i Enhanced Security using the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES).

Engineered for wireless multimedia, the IC contains built-in support for the Wireless Media Extensions (WME) Quality of Service (QoS) capabilities discussed in the IEEE 802.11e draft standard.

The company is currently sampling the RT2500USB to its customers for USB 2.0 applications, with RT2500USB-based products expected to begin volume shipping this month.
