British wireless communications developer Ubinetics will expand its Indian development center with an additional $25 million investment and the hiring of another 150 software engineers over the next 18 months.

Ubinetics originally established a center here in 2001 to focus on wireless products based on the Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) specification, General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and Universal Mobile Telecommunications Systems (UMTS).

"We are already doing more than 50 percent of our protocol development in India, and almost 40 percent of our overall research and development efforts are based here in Bangalore," said Ubinetics CEO Bjorn Krylander.

In order to attract expertise and develop 3G design capabilities, Ubinetics plans to form an academy that will include lectures by both 3G experts Ubinetics executives.

Ubinetics earned over $30 million in the previous fiscal year, with much of it coming from test and measurement products along with the licensing of 3G handset technology to semiconductor and handset companies.

Ubinetics is a spinoff of the wireless division of PA Consulting Group.

Other companies with telecommunications software development here include Kyocera and Samsung.
