NEC Corp. and NEC Magnus Communications have begun marketing the GM200 series of Gigabit media converters, which can support multiple broadband services over an optical fiber.

Claimed by the two companies as the industry's first, the system allows telecom service providers to reduce equipment and line costs by offering bandwidth guarantee services, such as IP telephony, and best effort-type network services, such as VPN, at the same time over a single optical line. The converter also supports the ITU-T G.983.3 International standard to enable users with a V-ONU (Video-Optical Network Unit) to provide video distribution services.

The GM200-C (center system) and the GM200-R (remote system) are priced at $2,550 and $2,550, respectively.

Over the next three years, NEC and NEC Magnus expect to sell 100 systems.
