The next-generation PlayStation (PS) will be unveiled as early as the end of the year by designer Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., which plans to demonstrate a prototype of its next game console during the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2005 next May.

Ken Kutaragi, president of the Sony unit, disclosed the timetable planned for PS next-generation during a meeting. "I want to report that the development of the next-generation system is satisfactory," said Kutaragi. The company plans to offer the development tool immediately after the premiere of the game box.

The Cell processor being jointly developed by Sony, Toshiba and IBM will be fabricated using a 65nm silicon-on-insulation process. It will serve as the core engine of the PlayStation next generation. Sony has already been evaluating samples of the processor.

Sony plans to introduce a portable PlayStation by the end of 2004 in Japan and next spring in major overseas markets. It would be the third PlayStation platform. Sony hopes the portable unit will expand the market from individual homes to individual users.

The portable version has 4.3-inch TFT display and employs a proprietary UMD optical disk with an 1.8GB capacity. Driven by two MIPS R4000 derivative processors, it will include interfaces to IEE802.11b, USB2.0, IrDA, IR remote and Memory Stick Duo links along with a 128-bit AES-based content protection system. Those functions will be integrated into two-chip configuration, Sony said.
