Intersil Corp. has launched a true bi-directional, ultra-low resistance, low-voltage, dual single-pole double throw (SPDT X 2) analog signal switch intended for use in cellphones, smartphones, PDAs and other portable battery-powered products.

Promising to provide enhanced performance and reliability, the MightyMUX ISL84684 has two independent switches, allowing it to replace two discrete SPDT devices where space is critical.

"The ISL84684 provides lower R(on), and better R(on) flatness and R(on) matching than existing competing devices," shared Mamoon Rashid, director of marketing for Intersil's Analog Solutions Products Group. "It offers significantly lower R(on) at lower supply voltages, such as 1.8V. What's more, with a greater than 9kV ESD withstand rating, this dual switch offers the industry's highest ESD withstand level of all competing sub-1-ohm devices, which yields increased reliability in handheld use and significant added value to our customers."

The new device is a guaranteed break-before-make dual SPDT switch IC that operates over a 1.65V to 3.6V supply range, with a power consumption of 0.75?A (max) over full temperature and supply range. The R(on) conduction resistance of each switch is 0.29 ohms at 2.7V and 0.4 ohms at 1.8V. When operated from a 2.7V supply, it has a typical R(on) flatness and channel matching of 0.03 ohms.

When operated from a nominal 3V supply, the switch is 1.8V logic compatible. Switching speed at a supply of 2.7V is typically 14ns turn-on and 6ns turn-off, reducing switching noise. According to the company, this is particularly important in headphone audio switching applications.

Available in 10-lead MSOP packaging or in a 3-by-3mm 10-pad thin DFN, the SPDT switch has a suggested resale price $1 for the ISL84684IR (TDFN) and 95 cents for ISL84684IU (MSOP) in 100 to 999-unit quantities. The ICs are available on tape and reel.
