Sipex Corp.'s SP7652 device is the first of the company's new PowerBlox family of ultra-miniature high-current dc-dc buck regulators. In a 7-by-4mm DFN package, the module, working from a wide-range (up to 28V) input, delivers 6A at voltages down to 0.8V. That makes the SP7652 the industry's smallest 6A component of its kind, according to the company. It sports an efficiency of 92 percent at full load.

Other features include circuitry for accommodating sequential power-up of multiple supplies, programmable soft-start, overtemperature protection, dual undervoltage lock-out (UVLO) thresholds, and short circuit protection. The part is packaged with three integrated heatsinks. It is rated for operation over the industrial temperature range of -40C to 85C.

The PowerBlox family, which requires a minimal number of external components, will ultimately include five products operating from 300kHz to 1.2MHz that deliver from 3A to 8A. Samples of the SP7652 are available now, as well as an evaluation board to assist the customer with device characterization. Pricing for the SP7652 begins at $2.92 each in 10,000-unit quantities.
