Asahi Kasei Microsystems Co. Ltd (AKM) introduced a single chip audio codec with 2-channel A/D and 8-channel D/A (192kHz compatible), built-in digital volume controls, 192kHz compatible DIR/DIT and 8-channel input/2-channel output.

Designed for A/V amplifiers, DVD receivers and digital TV, the AK4588 upgrades AK4586 performance through enhancements that give it function, performance and control interchangeability with both the AK4628 2- or 8-channel codec and the AK4114 8-input/2-output DIR, which enable simple upgrading of multichannel systems to the latest Dolby Digital Surround EX and DTS 96/24 formats.

The 6-channel codec's built-in digital audio receiver (DIR) is for support of multichannel audio such as Dolby Digital (AC-3), DTS, MPEG and AAC.

According to AKM, the audio interface formats are also time division multiplex system compatible, simplifying the interface with a DSP and reduces overall A/V equipment costs. Double-speed compatibility is a further enhancement that makes the AK4588 a suitable single-chip solution for designing a high-grade home theater system.

The AK4588 is housed in an 80-pin LQFP package. Engineering samples and evaluation boards are already available.
