Semtech International AG, a supplier of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors, has developed a dual synchronous DDR and DDR2 buck power supply controller, targeting notebooks, tablet PCs and embedded applications.

According to the company, the SC1486A builds upon its widely accepted SC1486 DDR power supply controller. This upgraded version provides a power supply solution for systems designers that are specifying DDR2 memory, or who want to design a migration path to DDR2 memory with minimal board changes. The device is also pin-compatible with its predecessor for seamless transition.

"Higher performance designs are moving to DDR2 memory, but the migration path to this new standard can vary dramatically for each customer," said Eddie Yeow, VP of Semtech's Portable Products Group. "We recognize the challenges faced by our customers and have provided the necessary flexibility in this power controller to help streamline design of their power circuitry."

Includes independently programmable output voltages

The SC1486A offers an input voltage range between 1.8V and 25V, enabling the device to directly interface with standard battery configurations and a/c adapters. Also provided are two independently programmable output voltages that can be adjusted from 5.5V down to 0.5V. To support DDR2, the first switching regulator can be used to generate 1.8V for memory chip supply and the second switching regulator can be used to provide a 0.9V floating reference to support the DDR2 active termination requirement. Providing a 1.25V, 3mA buffered reference output, the controller IC can also function as a general purpose dual switching regulator, eliminating costly pins.

Other key features of the new buck power supply controller include a constant on-time design for fast transient response, programmable output frequency from 300kHz to 600kHz, and integrated output drivers with "soft" activation to reduce switching noise.

Housed in a TSSOP-28 package, the SC1486AITSTR (tin-lead) and SC1486AITSTRT (lead-free) are priced at $2.32 each in 1,000-piece orders. Additional information can be found online.
