Manufacturing services company Fabrinet has inked an agreement with optical transceiver developer Opnext, under which Fabrinet will handle the manufacturing of Opnext's 2.5- and 10Gbit optical transceivers for Sonet/SDH and WDM applications.
Formed out of Hitachi, Opnext develops a host of components for optical networking applications including high-power lasers, laser-diode modules, transmitters and receivers, Xenpak modules, optical transceivers, and optical transponders. The company's transceiver products are designed specifically for long-haul Sonet/SDH and WDM applications.
Opnext has already started transitioning the transceiver manufacturing capabilities to Fabrinet's Thailand facility. Opnext will continue to design the transceivers as well as their key components. Opnext will also maintain certain critical manufacturing operations in Japan to support the design and manufacture of its other key components.
