Maxim rolls out ICs for X-Scale-powered devices

The MAX1586A/MAX1586B/MAX1587A from Maxim Integrated Products are claimed to be the smallest, most efficient power-management ICs designed for devices using Intel X-Scale microprocessors.

The MAX1586/MAX1587 feature ultra-high-performance step-down converters with 1MHz synchronous rectification that eliminates external diodes, saving cost and size. The new ICs integrate seven high-performance, low-operating current power supplies along with supervisory and management functions. The dc-dc I/O supply can be preset to 3.3V or 3V, or adjusted to other values, with currents up to 1.3A.

The DRAM supply on the MAX1586A and MAX1587A is preset for 1.8V or 2.5V, while the MAX1586B DRAM supply is preset for 3.3V or 2.5V, providing up to 900mA. The DRAM supply on all devices can also be adjusted with external resistors. The CPU core supply is serially programmed for dynamic voltage management and delivers 500mA. Linear-regulated outputs are provided for SRAM, PLL and USIM supplies.

To minimize sleep-state quiescent current, I/O and DRAM supplies have bypass "sleep" LDOs that can be activated to minimize battery drain when output current is very low, thus achieving a quiescent current of 60?A. All dc-dc outputs also operate with fixed-frequency PWM control and automatically switch from PWM to skip-mode operation at light loads to extend battery life. Other functions include separate on/off control for all dc-dc converters, low-battery and dead-battery detection, reset and power-OK outputs, and a backup battery input.

A 2.6V to 5.5V input-voltage range allows the use of a 1-cell Li-ion, 3-cell NiMH or a regulated 5V input. The MAX1586A and MAX1586B feature an additional linear regulator (V6) for VCC_USIM and low-battery and dead-battery comparators.

With prices starting at $5.80 (1,000-up, FOB USA), the MAX1587A is available in a 6-by-6mm, 40-pin thin QFN package, while the MAX1586 is housed in a 7-by-7mm, 48-pin thin QFN package. The power-management ICs are screened for the extended temperature range. An evaluation kit is also available to help speed designs.
