ON Semiconductor has delivered ten power management devices designed as a comprehensive, cost-effective solution to meet the emerging AdvancedTCA spec for telecom equipment. The collection of devices includes a hot-plug IC, three PWM/buck controllers, charge pump, OR-ing diode, discrete FET switch and three power MOSFETs.

At the input, the company's NIS5101 Smart HotPlug is a highly integrated hot swap protection IC with thermal protection circuitry that enables safe insertion and removal of electronic equipment to -48V backplanes. This IC offers an adjustable current limit with no external power shunt required, features undervoltage and overvoltage lockouts and includes an integrated power MOSFET switch. It serves with the company's NUD3048 FET switch as part of the system's -48V to 12V bus converter circuitry.

The NIS6111 diode and NIS6201 floating charge-pump that follow enables OR-ing of two -48V inputs. The combination, said to deliver the function of the industry's fastest diode with the low forward voltage drop of a power MOSFET, can be used with external MOSFETs to handle higher currents.

The controllers include the NCP1561 push-pull/half-bridge device, which incorporates all the features required for dc-dc conversion from the 48V rail. It includes a high voltage start-up circuit that minimizes external components, and a suite of protection features such as undervoltage shutdown, current limiting and soft-start. The output controllers include the NCP5331 two-phase buck device, suited for generating a low-voltage, high-current output. It incorporates the company's enhanced V? control methodology and internal gate drivers, and features adjustable switching frequency of up to 600kHz and a 0.8 percent precision reference.

A second output controller, the NCP5425 dual synchronous buck device, has internal gate drivers that can provide two independent outputs or one high-current output. This controller offers adjustable switching frequency up to 750kHz and a 0.8V reference accurate to 1 percent.

At the output, three MOSFETs, the NTD60N02R, NTD30N02 and NTD85N02R offer high power efficiency and low on-resistance.

The NIS5101 Smart Hot Plug device is available in a S-PAK package and is priced at $2.10 each in 10,000-unit quantities. The NUD3048 FET switch, in a TSOP-6, is 13 cents. The NIS6111 OR-ing diode, in a PLLP package is $2.39 each, and the NIS6201 charge pump, in an SO-8, is 39 cents.

The controller prices are $1.08 each for the NCP1561 (SOIC-16) and NCP5425 (TSOP-20), the NCP5331 controller (LQFP32) is $1.75 each, and the NTDF60N02R, NTD30N02 and NTD85N02R MOSFETs range from 23 cents to 32 cents.
