Assemblon's latest version of its SVS Pro set-up verification software provides comprehensive, easy-to-use facilities for ensuring correct set-up of the company's surface-mount pick-and-place machines for assured zero-defect set-up.

Correct component set-up of the pick-and-place machines is one of the critical steps in the production process, key to zero defect manufacturing, Assemblon explained. The SVS Pro not only helps the operator to verify feeder set-up, but also triggers preparation for component replenishment and supports the entire logistics process. The information gathered by SVS Pro can also be used by traceability systems in safety critical applications.

The SVS Pro is designed to maximize production efficiency and yield. Off-line, component reels are loaded unto feeders and the barcode data on the reels - component part number, vendor and lot code - is scanned and stored in feeder memory.

When the feeder is loaded unto a trolley, SVS Pro automatically verifies the match between the component ID and its position on the trolley, ensuring that each feeder is loaded into the correct trolley slot. At changeover, these accuracy-assured trolleys are loaded unto the machine and feeder contents again verified, against the actual production program, in a matter of minutes. According to the company, this ensures correct set-up even when last minute changes to the design have been made. Production will not start with an incorrect trolley set-up.

The SVS Pro also keeps track of component usage, with two advantages. First, it facilitates inventory management by feeding component usage data back to warehousing systems, and second, it alerts the operator when a reel is running low, triggering reel splicing without disrupting production. When a production run is completed, the software enables a new barcode to be generated off-line for each reel, updating the barcode sticker on the reel with the number of components remaining.

The SVS Pro system is comprised of a standalone loading unit, a machine package for installing SVS Pro functionality on the machine, and a trolley upgrade enabling communication between feeders and SVS Pro. The software is available for all Assemblon pick-and-place machines.
