Japan-based Matsushita Electric Ind. Co. Ltd has revealed plans on cutting production costs in China by at least 20 percent in an attempt to heighten its competitiveness in the market.

"Reducing costs by 10 percent a year is just not enough. The continuing decline in prices keeps spurring the competition," says Executive Vice President Yukio Shohtoku. He adds that the company will be reorganizing its 45 plants in the mainland based on product categories.

Matsushita aims to secure a market position in mainland China in both manufacturing and sales. It manufactures and markets products in mature categories such as electronic components and home appliances, and also produces high-end digital products from camera phones to flat-panel displays.

The company's business in the mainland achieves an annual growth of about 30 percent, and it estimates a production value worth $9.08 billion in the year ending March 2006.
