Acterna makes VoIP test, management solution available

Acterna Corp. unveiled its Voice over IP (VoIP) Solution, claimed to be the industry's only integrated VoIP test and management solution for service providers and cable operators.

"For service providers, the Acterna VoIP Solution allows for more in-depth troubleshooting at the premise by less experienced technicians and leverages the use of experienced technicians without field deployment," stated John Govert, global VP of strategy development for Acterna's Telecom Division.

Used alone or together, purpose-built, bundled sets of test instruments, systems and software are coordinated with each stage of VoIP service delivery, reducing costs associated with the rollout and day-to-day maintenance of VoIP service offerings.

The VoIP Solution enables the field technician to coordinate troubleshooting with experienced/higher-tiered technicians at a central location by way of the HST-3000 for delivery over DSL, the DSAM series for cable operators, the DA-3400 or DA-3600A, and the PVA-1000. "Voice packet captures at a customer site can be sent to a remote server for in-depth voice and protocol analysis, rather than requiring the deployment of a higher-tiered, more experienced data engineer to the field. Any technician with access rights to the server can then download the packet capture and conduct voice and packet analysis, reducing costs and improving quality by eliminating escalations in service problems," Govert explained.

The HST-3000 is a handheld field test tool for basic turn-up and troubleshooting of VoIP deployment, supporting physical layer analysis through packet metrics, signaling analysis and voice quality determination. Capabilities of the HST-3000 allow packet capture of live VoIP calls, including VoIP call storage and an integrated FTP (File Transfer Protocol) capability to send captured VoIP calls to be analyzed by the PVA-1000 software. According to the company, the HST was created to improve efficiency and lower the costs of installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting business and residential services and networks. The HST-3000 combines copper, voice and data service testing features with process automation capabilities in a lightweight, battery-operated unit.
