Microsoft Corp. and Thomson have agreed to develop a broadband home-network-enabled version of Microsoft's MSN TV Internet receiver, extending an existing technology and service agreement.

The system is a complete overhaul of the existing device and service based on standard Microsoft technologies and incorporates advanced technology from Thomson. The product will be available through major retailers in time for the 2004 holiday shopping season.

The deal enables Thomson to strengthen its partnership with Microsoft's MSN TV service based in Mountain View, California. Thomson has supplied MSN the technology to deliver integrated media services the past four years, according to Keith Wehmeyer, general manager of IP decoders at Thomson.

Besides Microsoft, Thomson supplies technology for other integrated media services, such as DIRECTV.

Additional information regarding MSN TV's next-generation product and service will be announced at a later date.
