Sales of enterprise-class WLAN equipment will increase by 75 percent in 2004, according to a market study released by Dell'Oro Group.

Besides strong sales this year, enterprise-class equipment will grow at an annual rate of 47 percent through 2008, the study predicted. The primary reason for the rapid growth is that security concerns are no longer as strong as they previously were.

"Until recently, corporations have been reluctant to adopt WLANs, primarily because of security concerns," Greg Collins, Dell'Oro's senior director of WLAN research, said in a statement. "Now with the improvements in management, encryption and user authentication, WLAN will penetrate larger corporations because the technology improves productivity by allowing users to connect to the network from anywhere."

Total sales for enterprise-class WLAN equipment will be $2.1 billion this year, according to the report.

By contrast, the study said that the growth curve on WLAN equipment for home offices and small businesses will peak soon. Sales of WLAN products to that market had long been more robust than sales of enterprise equipment.
